Authentication procedure

You use the authentication procedure in order to verify your identity to the account provider. When you use payment services online and access your payment account via online banking, authentication can take place, for example, via smartphone app, SMS or photo TAN.

Once you complete such an authentication process, the payment service provider performs an identity verification process (technical authentication). The procedure offered enables the payment service provider to check whether requests to access an account or payment orders are being made by a person authorised to do so.

The BaFin account comparison website indicates whether accounts have at least one authentication procedure for which no additional fee is charged. Please contact the account provider to find out which authentication procedure is covered by the monthly fee.

A fee may potentially be charged for using any other authentication procedure. The BaFin account comparison website does not provide information on such additional fees.
